A Tlatilco Terracotta Whistle, Central Mexico, 1200–600 B.C.

Finely hand-modelled terracotta figure representing a stylized anthropomorphic character with rounded body, expressive face and both arms raised to the head in a characteristic gesture. The piece functions as a whistle, with a hollow interior and carefully placed aperture. The surface shows a light beige slip with areas of natural encrustation and attractive wear consistent with its age.
Whistles of this type were common in Preclassic Mexico and were used in rituals, ceremonies and as musical instruments or toys.
