A Rare Taino Stone Owl Zemí, Dominican Republic, Greater Antilles, 10th–15th century A.D.
Carved from dark grey andesite with a fine polished patina, this powerful miniature sculpture depicts a stylized owl with large circular eyes, a prominent hooked beak, and wings folded tightly around its compact body. The figure is shown in a characteristic crouched posture with finely incised details on the feathers, wings, and facial features. In Taino culture, owl zemíes were important symbolic objects associated with the night, the spirit world, ancestors, and shamanic power.
This is a very fine and rare example of small-scale Taino stone carving with excellent sculptural quality and museum appeal.
