Large oil lamp of the so-called “Red Slip Ware”, which was produced in Roman Northern Africa. The central disc of this oil lamp is decorated with a plant motif, specifically a branch with leaves. The palm branch was a symbol of victory in the Roman world and, later, a symbol of peace and triumph over death in the Christian context. The shoulder features the classic ‘fishtail’ or ‘palmette’ decoration that frames the central disc. Provenance: Former Dutch private collection Mejns and private collection Aachen, acquired between 1970 and 1990; acquired at auction Gorny & Mosch, Germany, 2025. Statement seen by Catawiki.
