穿戴历史的一部分,而不仅仅是珠宝

Rare Late Roman Anthropomorphic Fascinum Amulet

Object Type: Phallic pendant / amulet (Fascinum type)
Period: Late Roman Period, ca.ca. 3rd–5th century AD
Material: Bronze
Form & Iconography: Composite fascinum with integrated human body and emphasized phallic element

Description
This pendant can be considered a rare and well-preserved example within the tradition of the fascinum. While in the Classical Roman world the fascinum is most commonly encountered in the form of simple, isolated phallic symbols, the present piece represents a more distinctive and less frequently attested typology, in which the phallic element is integrated into a schematic human body.

The depiction of the phallus together with the body suggests that the symbol was conceived not merely as a singular sign, but as part of a broader symbolic language encompassing vital force, bodily integrity, fertility, and divine protection. Such composite representations reflect an approach in which the fascinum, worn close to the body, was intended to convey personal protection and life-giving power directly through the human form itself.

The object’s largely intact form and relatively limited surface wear indicate prolonged yet controlled use, and suggest that it was regarded in its time as a carefully fashioned amuletic object. In this respect, the pendant stands out as a rare and high-quality example of portable cult imagery, illustrating the fascinum’s symbolic potency in one of its most expressive and meaningful visual formulations within the Roman cultural sphere.

Dimensions:
Height : 17.1 mm
Width : 09.36 mm
Depth : 04.64 mm
Weight: 2.15 g

Information
The presentation and sales process is conducted in accordance with principles of transparency, scholarly consistency, and good faith. Within this framework, no object is knowingly presented as a copy or imitation.

The object has been documented using high-resolution imaging equipment. Its physical structure and form remain unaltered, and only limited color-balance adjustments have been applied to ensure visual accuracy.

Given that high-resolution imagery may affect the perception of scale, prospective evaluation should consider the images in conjunction with the stated measurements.

All statements regarding dating, intended function, symbolic interpretation, and material identification represent high-probability academic assessments derived from typological analyses, comparative examples from museum collections, and expert opinion. Definitive verification would require advanced laboratory analysis, which falls outside the scope of the sales process.

Upon request prior to shipment, a signed ownership document issued in the buyer’s name, together with an independent expert evaluation report, may be provided in PDF format.
