A Rare Qingbai Handled Jar, Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), China
Height 11.3 cm / Width 10.8 cm
The jar is of rounded, well-balanced form, with a short, slightly constricted neck and four small lug handles evenly spaced around the shoulder, lending a subtle rhythmic quality to the silhouette. It is covered overall in a soft qingbai glaze of pale bluish-white tone, exhibiting the characteristic translucency and understated elegance associated with Southern Song wares.
The body is finely potted, the glaze showing natural kiln effects and minor speckling, with areas of burial accretion and wear consistent with age. The foot is neatly finished, revealing the buff body and traces of firing, including iron-rich spotting to the exposed areas.
Quietly refined in both form and glaze, the piece exemplifies the restrained aesthetic of Song dynasty ceramics, balancing utilitarian function with subtle sophistication.
