Pair of beautiful handmade ceremonial bark-cloth mats from the Lake Sentani tribes of Papua New Guinea. Entirely handcrafted using traditional techniques, these mats are produced by beating and softening the fibrous inner bark of a local eucalyptus species, then hand-painted with natural pigments of vegetable origin. The two pieces feature distinct symbolic tribal compositions: one decorated with bold geometric spiral motifs, the other with stylized anthropomorphic figures framed by traditional ornamental borders. Such artworks were traditionally used during ceremonies, exchanges, and important social occasions within the tribal communities of the Sentani region. The surfaces display wonderful age, irregular textures, and visible handmade workmanship that greatly enhance their ethnographic authenticity and decorative appeal. Minor tears, edge wear, folds, and natural imperfections are fully consistent with traditional bark-cloth manufacture and age.
