Rare silver Ancient Roman devotional offering of a male figure. The finely cast silver votive figure depicting a standing male is executed in a distinctive style of the Gallo-Roman world. The figure is shown frontally with stylised facial features and softly rendered beard and holding a patera in his right hand. He is dressed in a short tunic with incised folds, the drapery falling diagonally across the torso and gathered at the waist.
-> Such figurines were typically offered in temples, shrines, or sacred springs as votive gifts, dedicated to deities in exchange for protection, healing, or fulfilment of vows.
Objects of this type provide a tangible insight into personal religious practices in the provincial Roman world, where indigenous beliefs and Roman customs coexisted and merged into a unique artistic language.
Height: ± 50,2 mm
Width: ± 19,8 mm
Condition: good and solid condition. The surface presents a soft silvery tone with age-related wear and minor irregularities and wear to the detailing.
Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).
-> Male votive figures from the Gallo-Roman world may represent worshippers, attendants, youthful deities, or idealised human devotees, depending on their attributes and original setting. Even when the precise identity cannot be determined with certainty, such figures reflect the personal nature of religion in Roman Gaul, where local Celtic traditions continued alongside Roman cult practice. This example belongs to that distinctive Gallo-Roman tradition of provincial votive art, in which Roman forms and regional beliefs came together in small but meaningful devotional objects.
Material:
This object has been carefully examined for its material and surface characteristics.
Laboratory analysis (e.g. XRF) is not routinely undertaken in private collecting, and destructive testing is avoided as it causes permanent damage to archaeological material.
Before modern hallmarking, gold and silver alloys varied depending on local resources, recycling practices and economic conditions.
