Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
Medieval iron prick spur, hand-forged wrought iron. It features a curved, slender U-shaped heel-band with rounded terminals with a pin to attach straps and a short neck with a pyramid shaped prick.
-> Prick spurs of this type were used by mounted Medieval knights and riders in the early to high medieval period. Their simple pointed terminals intended to give precise cues to the horse. Before the widespread adoption of rowel spurs, this pointed form was the standard type used by horsemen, including warriors and members of the mounted elite.. A characteristic example of medieval equestrian equipment.
Length: ± 127 mm
Condition: good, solid and stable condition. Signs of wear consistent with an ancient iron artefact.
Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).
-> Spurs were an important part of medieval riding equipment and are closely linked with the development of cavalry, chivalry, and mounted status. In practical terms they allowed the rider to communicate more precisely with the horse, but they also carried social meaning. Possession of spurs, especially in martial contexts, could reflect the identity and rank of a mounted individual.
The prick spur is the earlier medieval type, characterised by a fixed pointed projection rather than a rotating rowel. Such spurs were widely used across Europe for centuries before later forms became dominant. Objects such as this provide a direct connection to medieval horsemanship and the material culture of travel, warfare, and elite riding tradition.
