During the Edo period, it was often painted black with a gold family crest and was worn by the shogun and his retainers when engaged in outdoor activities. Jingasa were made from materials such as thin iron, leather, or paper, and the surface was coated with lacquer. In later times, samurai wore lacquered hats with curled-up brims when going out. Over time, it evolved into an item incorporating artistic designs and materials that reflected status and rank.
