An ornate pair of fully restored wooden lacquered temple lanterns 行灯 (andon). The lanterns are finished in a bright crimson red lacquer, with globular lampshades lined in bright red silk.
Each lantern is constructed with two upright pillars surmounted by an accolade-shaped handle, connected by decorative panels inlaid with mother-of-pearl depictions of family crests 紋 (mon) and cranes among clouds.
The globular shades can slide upward along the pillars, originally allowing access to place a candle inside. The lanterns have now been newly electrified with CE-compliant fittings. When illuminated, the red silk lining emits a warm and striking glow.
