1964’s Vintage Seiko Crown 572990 Silver Case Mat Sunburst Pearl White Dial 21Jewels Brand-new Leather Band Manual Wind Men's Watch Good Condition KM201 Seiko Crown 572990 is a historic milestone model with part of the legendary Seiko Crown line (1959–mid 1960s) that brought Japan to Swiss-level accuracy and direct ancestor of the first Grand Seiko (3180) with same design philosophy and base movement architecture. Elegant sunburst / pearl-white dial with applied indices, classic early-1960s dress style “Big face” design (~36mm), visually larger than typical watches of the era and clean 3-hand layout, timeless and highly wearable vintage. This model became the foundation platform for Grand Seiko development. The Seiko Crown line was introduced in 1959 and became one of Seiko’s core mid-range manual-wind dress watches during the early 1960s. It helped establish Seiko’s reputation for robust, precision mechanical watches before the rise of Grand/King Seiko series. Crown series were produced predominantly early- to mid-1960s (c.1960–1967) by Kameido Daini Seikosha 亀戸第二精工舎. Historically, this model was developed as a mid-range model during Seiko's transition from high-end King Seiko Grand Seiko to more affordable models in the 1960s. This is a watch that embodies the charm of vintage timepieces. This Seiko Crown model is a hand-wound antique wristwatch developed based on a design philosophy similar to that of the high-end "King Seiko" Its movement accuracy was excellent for its time, and its slim case made it popular as a business or dress watch. The 560 movement used for Crown series was part of Seiko’s “next-generation” hand-wound family — featuring a larger balance wheel and Diashock anti-shock system for sturdier, predictable performance. Produced at a time when Seiko was ramping up mechanical precision and consistency, this caliber bridges earlier 40x series movements and later high-grade lines. It is a practical, slim mechanical movement found in watches such as the Skyliner and Sea Lion. Its distinctive features include a 21-jewel movement, an 18,000 bph (vibrations per hour) movement, and a practical accuracy of approximately ±60seconds per day, ensuring highly stable accuracy at the time. Although it is not as high-end as the King Seiko or Grand Seiko, it is still highly regarded by vintage collectors as a practical mid-priced model with a design equivalent to the high-end " King Seiko or Grand Seiko " models as “Pre-Grand Seiko DNA” movement in collector terms. It is no exaggeration to say that the foundation of Seiko "Quartz Revolution of the 1970’s was achieved based on such high level of precision engineering at the time. This timepiece conveys the technology and aesthetic sensibilities of the time and still attracts Seiko Vintage collectors. Features: ■Brand Design: SEIKO Crown ■Model Number: Crown 572990 ■Product Number:4300064 Manufactured March 1964: Seiko serial numbers are six digits long, with the first two digits indicating the year and month of manufacture. The first number (4) indicates the fourth year of the 1960s, meaning the watch was manufactured in 1964. The next letter (3) is the month code. For Seiko,1-9 represents January through September, O = October, N = November, and D = December. → "N" is November. Therefore, this watch was manufactured in March 1964. ■Technical features of Seiko Caliber 560— Technical Specifications Developed from the Marvel architecture, but refined for higher precision and forms the technical base of early Grand Seiko lineage, known for durability, ease of servicing and stable timekeeping • Type: Manual-winding mechanical movement (hand-wound). Used in: Seiko Crown series (late 1950s–1960s). • Development: Built at Seiko’s Suwa factory; advanced for its era with larger component sizes to improve stability and serviceability. • Number of Jewels: 21-jewel versions more common on Crown models • Beat Rate (Frequency):18,000 vibrations per hour (vph) (~2.5 Hz) — traditional moderate rate for vintage manual movements. • Diameter:(movement plate diameter) • Functions: Hours, minutes, seconds (no date). • Hacking: No hacking (seconds do not stop when setting time). • Power Reserve:40–48 hours typical for similar designs (not always published for 560 specifically, but consistent with its gearing and spring size) • Regulation:Regulator lever for timing adjustment. (Standard for 1960s manual movements) • Shock Protection: Diashock system to protect balance pivots. (Common in Seiko hand-wound calibers of this era) • Hairspring/Balance: Traditional flat hairspring with balance size suited to 18 kHz rate. (Consistent with vintage specs。) ■Why These Specs Matter: • Beat Rate (18,000 vph): This moderate beat was common in 1950s-60s manual watches. Lower beat rates generally mean less wear on parts, simpler regulation, and strong torque from the mainspring — good for reliability, but slightly less smooth seconds sweep compared to modern 28,800 vph movements. • Jewels & Lubrication:19-jewel versions are slightly simpler;21-jewel versions add rubies to reduce friction on more moving parts. More jewels usually help with longevity and precision, especially in a straightforward movement without extra features. • Size: The 27.6mm diameter makes it slightly larger than some of Seiko’s smaller hand-winds (e.g., older Marvel calibers ~25-26mm) This gave more room for larger gears and springs, boosting accuracy and power reserve. • Design & Historical Context: The Cal. 560 was based on Seiko’s earlier Marvel series and acted as a foundation for future higher-grade movements (including the hand-wound basis for early King/Grand Seiko calibers like Cal. 3180)。It was engineered to be robust, service-friendly, and accurate for its time, fitting the mid-range dress-watch market before automatic movements became dominant. ■Materials: • Case: Stainless Steel • Case Back: Stainless steel Back inside shows inscription of Crane mark S.T.P. 572990 Japan E • Dial: Sunburnt Champagne Pearl White color face with classic indexes and Dauphine 3 hands display combined for both legibility and elegance. • Case Size:36mmexcluding crown X 43mm including case lug Thickness: 10mm • Weight:40.0gms • Band: Brand-new leather band with 22cm long relaxed and less 5cm adjustable in 8 holes • Crystal: Domed Acrylic 【Notes】This watch is not water-resistant. Please avoid wearing it in the rain or on hot, humid days. 【Winding Tips】 To wind the mainspring, turn the crown slowly and gently in clockwise and counterclockwise both directions back and forth until you feel stiff strong resistance, and you could hardly wind further. Strong-Over-winding may damage the mainspring. A full wind usually generates enough power for the watch to last for 24 hours. To pull out the crown, insert your fingernail between the case and the crown and gently lever it outward. The second hand does not stop when setting the time. ■Condition: Overall: The watch is in good pre-owned vintage condition and is currently in working order. There are light scratches and signs of wear on the case consistent with normal use over time. Case: Silver St-Steel Case shows very minor typical surface scratches, micro-scuffs, and signs of wear due to its vintage age and regular use. Dial & Crystal: The dial remains in excellent, clean condition, well preserved with clear printing, applied indices, and an attractive texture that has aged gracefully. The crystal shows some minor micro-wear upon close inspection. Tested by manual winding three times each time during May 1st to 10th 2026, the power reserve was 26,34and 32 hours respectively.so power reserve has slightly reduced due to age-related wear and metal fatigue on the mainspring. But despite being over 60 years of usage, the watch is in good condition overall and still does work precisely, but very careful handling, when winding and setting time, is required due to a real vintage watch. As the movement and lubrication are in good condition, it is suitable for daily wear if wounded and worn regularly. It needs to be wounded at your convenience daily by natural arm movement to keep more accurate time. It was functioning normally at the time of listing, so it should continue to function without any issues. Please be sure you are satisfied with the condition before bidding, so please check the photos and product description and ask any questions you may have (please note, however, that we may not be able to answer questions close to the end of the auction)
