Ancient Roman Imperial Bronze Legionary Ring with “III” Bezel Mark
Roman Empire, circa 1st–3rd century A.D.
A finely preserved ancient Roman bronze legionary ring featuring a raised oval bezel engraved with the numeral “III,” almost certainly referring to Legio III, one of the distinguished military units of the Imperial Roman army. Rings of this type were worn by soldiers, officers, or individuals connected to the military sphere, serving both as personal adornment and as symbols of identity and allegiance.
The ring is formed from solid cast bronze with a tapering hoop and slightly convex bezel. The engraved “III” motif is deeply and clearly cut, remaining remarkably legible despite its great antiquity. The piece displays an attractive dark olive-green patina with traces of earthen encrustation, giving the surface a pleasing archaeological character.
Minimalist military rings bearing numerals or legionary identifiers are highly sought-after due to their direct association with the Roman army and the expanding frontier culture of the Imperial period.
Condition:
Very well preserved for type, with an intact hoop and crisp engraved bezel device. Attractive original patina with light earthen deposits and minor surface wear consistent with age. A particularly clean and wearable example.
