Item Description:
末廣学 Suehiro Manabu(1966-)
This striking Bizen-ware flower vase (hana-ike) is a bold expression of contemporary Japanese ceramics by Suehiro Manabu, a leading voice in modern Bizen pottery.
Fired without glaze in the ancient tradition of Bizen-yaki — one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns — the vessel draws its extraordinary surface richness entirely from the interaction of clay, flame, and natural wood ash during a prolonged kiln firing.
The defining feature of this work is its sculptural wave-stripe pattern (nami-jōmon), a traditional Bizen motif rendered here in dramatic three-dimensional relief, transforming a classical decorative element into a dynamic architectural form.
The undulating ridges wrap around the body of the vessel, creating a play of light and shadow that animates the austere, unglazed surface.
Rich earth tones of deep amber, warm rust, and charcoal grey emerge from the high-temperature wood-ash firing, giving each face of the piece a subtly different character.
The base bears the artist's impressed seal (tōin).
This work is accompanied by its original wooden presentation box (tomobako) bearing the artist's signature.

Artist Profile
Suehiro Manabu(末廣学, 1966–)is a Bizen-ware ceramicist who studied under Mori Togaku (森陶岳), the celebrated master of large-kiln Bizen firing and Okayama Prefectural Intangible Cultural Heritage holder. Suehiro established his own kiln in 1993 and has developed a distinctive body of work that integrates the classical language of Bizen — unglazed, wood-fired stoneware with its characteristic warm earth tones and natural kiln effects — with an original sculptural sensibility informed by contemporary aesthetics. His pieces are sought after by collectors of both traditional Japanese ceramics and modern studio pottery.
