烧締水壶(Mizusashi)带凸耳 - 陶瓷 - Genya Sonobe / 園部玄哉 (b. 1951) - 日本 - Heisei period (1989-present)

Description: This yakishime stoneware water jar (mizusashi) is formed with two small applied lugs at the shoulders and accompanied by a fitted ceramic lid. The surface remains unglazed, allowing the high-temperature firing to bring out natural ash deposits and varied kiln effects across its textured body. Earthy brown and reddish-brown tones move across the form, with a flow of greenish-yellow natural ash glaze descending along one side, a direct trace of the firing process. The rim opens slightly outward, meeting a matched lid finished with a gently curled knob. On the flat, unglazed base, the artist’s stylized “玄” mark is incised. The piece is housed in its original signed and sealed wooden tomobako, inscribed “Yakishime lugged water jar” and “Genya,” and accompanied by a yellow cloth and a printed biography. Dimensions: Width (including lugs): 19 cm Depth: 17 cm Height: 21 cm Opening diameter: 11.5 cm Weight: 1500 g Condition: No chips, cracks or restorations. Artist Profile: Genya Sonobe (b. 1951) was born in Hokkaido. After leaving the Department of Mathematics at the Tokyo University of Science in 1974, he began studying raku ware ceramics in Nagoya. In 1983, he established his own studio in Seto City and served as an instructor at the Tokyo Designer Gakuin College. He was selected for the 2nd International Ceramics Festival Mino in 1989. While widely known for his raku tea bowls, he has produced diverse works, holding solo exhibitions and conducting international workshops in countries such as Portugal.
