Japanese Katana — Nihontō — Signed Munetoshi 宗俊
Classical elegance in polished black lacquer with nautical-themed koshirae
This is a signed sword with a sober and well-balanced presence. The blade is signed by Munetoshi 宗俊, attributed to the early Edo period, and mounted in a complete koshirae coordinated with refined taste and a classical black saya. The ensemble offers a restrained, martial and elegant aesthetic, suitable for both display and the study of Japanese sword craftsmanship.
Blade details — Nagasa
The blade is the core of this piece, notable for its generous length, harmonious curvature and the signature of its maker.
Signature — Mei: Munetoshi 宗俊. Visible signature on the nakago.
Period: Early Edo period.
Blade length — Nagasa: 65.3 cm.
Curvature — Sori: 1.6 cm. A balanced curvature that gives the blade a refined and functional silhouette.
Mekugi-ana: 1. This indicates that the blade preserves a clean and well-maintained configuration.
Hamon: This type of hamon is appreciated for its formal purity and for the technical discipline it requires, since any irregularity is more apparent than in more active patterns.
Condition: The blade preserves a polish that allows the temper line and the general structure of the steel to be properly appreciated.
Koshirae: “The journey” and the classical black saya
The mounting presents a coherent composition centred on nautical and natural motifs.
Fuchi-kashira: Made of dark metal, with refined gold and silver inlaid details. They depict traditional boats or small vessels sailing, a classical motif evoking travel, calmness and mastery of water.
Menuki: Decorative elements beneath the wrapping with vegetal and floral motifs, adding a naturalistic component to the ensemble.
Saya: Finished in polished black lacquer —kuroro—, a classical and timeless finish. Its smooth and glossy surface provides an appropriate contrast with the texture of the tsuka-ito.
Tsuba: A robust circular iron guard with a restrained design, openwork —sukashi— and inlaid details that harmonise with the general character of the mounting.
Tsuka: Wrapped in black silk over white samegawa. The combination of pale ray skin and black tsuka-ito maintains a traditional, clean and balanced aesthetic.
Provenance and authenticity
The sword is accompanied by its Japanese torokusho, the official registration certificate issued in Japan.
Prefecture: Nagano
Registration: Nagano
Type: Katana
Signature: Munetoshi 宗俊
The torokusho confirms its legal registration as a Japanese sword within the official Japanese system for the preservation and control of nihontō.
This katana combines the authorship of Munetoshi 宗俊, a blade attributed to the early Edo period, a clean suguha hamon and a complete mounting of coordinated aesthetic character. The black lacquered saya, the fuchi-kashira with boat motifs, the vegetal menuki and the iron tsuba form a sober, coherent and tasteful ensemble.
