Up for auction is an elegantly carved anthropomorphic mask from the Punu people of Gabon. These masks, known as Okuyi or Mukudj, represent the idealized beauty of a female ancestor spirit.
This fine piece features the characteristic towering, bi-lobed coiffure with finely incised parallel lines. The face displays the classic softly closed "coffee-bean" eyes, giving the mask a peaceful, meditative expression. Notably, the forehead features the raised diamond-shaped scarification (Magumbi), accentuated with red pigments, matching the full lips. Remnants of white kaolin clay on the face symbolize the connection to the realm of the ancestors.
