铃木五郎 — 稀有的织部杯,附签名木盒 - 石器 - 鈴木五郎 Suzuki Goro(1941-) - 日本 - 1900–2000

Item Description 鈴木五郎 Suzuki Goro(1941-) This striking Oribe cup is a quintessential work by acclaimed Japanese ceramist Suzuki Goro, one of Japan's most original and celebrated contemporary potters. Crafted in his signature bold, free-spirited style, the cylindrical vessel is shaped by hand and covered in a richly variegated Oribe glaze — deep mossy green and warm ochre tones flowing over a coarse, tactile stoneware body. The surface is alive with dynamic carved striations that spiral and sweep across the form, evoking raw natural forces such as flowing water or windswept grass. The irregular, undulating rim and the deliberately rustic, unglazed foot ring exemplify the Momoyama-inspired wabi aesthetic that defines Suzuki's artistic vision. The interior carries a thin wash of the same green glaze, and the base bears the artist's impressed seal. The work is accompanied by its original signed wooden tomobako (presentation box), inscribed with the title "Oribe Cup" in the artist's own hand — an important mark of authenticity and provenance. Size Height: 13.5 cm Width: 7.5 cm Depth: 7.5 cm Weight 428 g Condition The cup is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs; the Oribe glaze displays the artist's intentional kiln effects including natural iron spotting and uneven glaze pooling, all consistent with the work's original fired character. Artist Profile Suzuki Goro (born 1941, Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture) is one of Japan's most distinctive and prolific contemporary ceramists, celebrated for his unconventional, free-form approach to the ancient Momoyama pottery traditions of Mino ware — particularly Oribe, Shino, and Ki-Seto glazes. He began his ceramic training at age 16 at the Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Vocational School in Seto, and by his early twenties had already won recognition at the prestigious Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition). A defining turning point came in 1969 when he travelled to the United States, encountering American studio ceramics and exhibiting in Los Angeles. This exposure deepened his belief that pottery could function as pure artistic expression, not merely craft. Returning to Japan, he established his own kiln in Seto, later relocating to Toyota City where he built a wood-fired kiln. He was invited as a visiting artist to the Rhode Island School of Design (1975) and the Cranbrook Academy of Art (1982), cementing his international reputation. In 2002, he received the prestigious Japan Ceramic Society Award. He is the creator of the original technique he named "Goribe" (五利部) — a portmanteau of his own name "Go," Sen no Rikyu's "Ri," and Furuta Oribe's "Be" — reflecting his philosophy of honouring tradition while transcending it. His works are held in major museum collections and are prized by collectors worldwide. NOTICE: The lot will be carefully packaged and sent by Japan Post, DHL or FedEx depend on the situation. It takes about 3 weeks to receive normally. Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Sometimes Customes or delivery company in your country contact you for Customs clearance via phone or email. Please make sure that you could answer the phone.
