I appreciate your cooperation. --- A collection of 12 miniature kokeshi dolls, all hand-crafted by named kokeshi artisans — including works signed by 遠藤幸三 Endo Kozo (1911–1991) and 岡崎武 Okazaki Takeshi (1936–2021) — gathered around the theme of intimate, palm-sized scale at approximately 10 cm each. Kokeshi are traditional Japanese wooden dolls, turned on a lathe and hand-painted by craftspeople known as kokeshi koji (kokeshi artisans). They originated in the hot-spring resort regions of Tohoku in the late Edo period and have been treasured as folk art for over two centuries. Each piece carries the maker's signature on the base, making them individually traceable to the hand that shaped and painted them. Endo Kozo worked in the Zao-Takayu (Zao hot-spring) tradition — one of the oldest lineages in Tohoku kokeshi craft, with roots stretching back to the Taisho era. His characteristic style drew on the quiet, expressive faces and warm earth-tone palette of the Yamagata mountain region. Okazaki Takeshi, active in the Togatta-kei tradition, produced kokeshi in the Takahashi Haokichi style under the guidance of Suzuki Shoji in Sendai. This set brings together figures in a charming variety of regional styles. Their elongated cylindrical bodies are decorated with hand-painted floral, stripe, and geometric motifs in warm reds, yellows, and blacks — a palette typical of the Tohoku tradition. The grouping also includes one small traditional wooden spinning top (koma), adding folk character to the ensemble. Maker signatures on the bases confirm crafted provenance. The lot spans multiple artisans and styles, offering both collector value and decorative appeal for admirers of Japanese folk craft. --- My message / 私のメッセージ Thank you so much for taking a look at my items.
