Ancient Roman Unguentarium/Glass bottle from the Empire period.
Description :
Roman unguentarium/glass bottle from the 1st-2nd Century AD ( Empire period). Size : 20 x 8 cm.
- Spherical base: typical of small vessels intended to hold liquids.
- Long, narrow neck: allowed controlled, slow pouring of oils, perfumes, or ointments.
- Broken rim: the lip is missing, but it doesn’t impact the beauty of the object.
This type of flask was most likely used to store perfumed oils, cosmetics, or medicinal liquids. In the Roman period, such vessels (often called unguentaria) were used in daily grooming and hygiene, and were also commonly placed in burials as grave goods.
Condition : Fair, the rim is broken, otherwise the ungentaria is in good condition.
Provenance : Bought in 2026 at the Parisian (France) auction house D., by the auctioneer A.G. This bottle has been expertised by the French collection expert Florian Bourguet. Before that, French Private collection.
The anonymized invoice from the auctioneer will be included.
