Set of 6 Napkins with E.B. Initials

The embroidered initials on these napkins strongly evoke the Rococo style of the early 18th century, which was especially popular in Paris during that period.

Rococo design is characterised by elegance, lightness, floral motifs, muted colours, and an exuberant use of flowing, natural, curvilinear ornamentation. The style soon extended beyond decorative arts into painting, where its aesthetic became closely associated with themes of love, beauty, and nature.

From France, Rococo rapidly spread throughout Europe, influencing artistic and decorative traditions in Germany, Austria, England, and many other countries.

The E.B. initials are embroidered in high relief with beautifully executed curves and flourishes. They are enclosed within an oval wreath of stylised design, joined at the two sides by what appear to be two crowns. The borders are richly decorated with an arabesque ground and adorned with large floral bouquets, creating a striking and highly ornamental composition.
