轮岛漆 Togidashi Maki-e 硯箱 — 珍稀金漆硯箱,附原箱 - 木, 漆 - 日本 - 1900–2000

Item Description This elegant suzuri-bako (inkstone box) is a masterpiece of Wajima-nuri lacquerware, originating from the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture — one of Japan's most celebrated lacquer-producing regions. The box showcases the refined togidashi maki-e (polished-out gold sprinkle) technique, considered one of the oldest and most sophisticated forms of maki-e decoration, perfected during the Heian period. In this meticulous process, lacquer is applied over gold and silver powders, then carefully polished down to reveal a perfectly flush, mirror-smooth surface — ensuring the metalwork is deeply integrated and virtually indestructible. The lid and body are finished in lustrous black lacquer (roiro-nuri), creating a dramatic backdrop for the golden maki-e motifs that shimmer with understated elegance. The piece comes in its original tomobako (matching wooden storage box), attesting to its provenance and collectible status. Wajima lacquerware is renowned for its exceptional durability and beauty, built through over 120 meticulous production steps involving specialist artisans — from the application of the unique local diatomite ground (ji-no-ko) to the final decorative polishing. It was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan in 1977. This suzuri-bako is a distinguished example of Japanese lacquer artistry, ideal for collectors of Japanese decorative arts and traditional crafts. Size Height: 4 cm Width: 20 cm Depth: 24 cm Weight 471 g Condition This piece shows minor age-related wear, light scratches, and slight soiling consistent with its antique status; overall structure and lacquer decoration are intact. NOTICE: The lot will be carefully packaged and sent by Japan Post, DHL or FedEx depend on the situation. It takes about 3 weeks to receive normally. Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Sometimes Customes or delivery company in your country contact you for Customs clearance via phone or email. Please make sure that you could answer the phone. If you don't, the parcel will return to me and it cost more double shipping fee for reshipping. I appreciate your cooperation.
