武士刀 - 日本 - Muromachi period (1333-1573)

Despite being unsigned, this katana has been recognized as a “Kaifu” by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords(NBTHK). The term “Kaifu” refers to swords that were produced in large numbers from the Kamakura period through the end of the Edo period in the Kaifu region of Awa Province (present-day Tokushima Prefecture), encouraged by the Kaifu clan. During the Edo period, these swords were forged in the town of Tokushima by smiths employed by the Hachisuka family. The blade has been polished to reveal its original finish, and the jigane and hamon are clearly visible, allowing for a delightful appreciation of the sword. While there are no chips on the cutting edge, minor dents and nicks are visible throughout the blade. There is a flaw measuring approximately 1.5 cm by 8 mm located 11 cm from the hamachi toward the sashiura side. The jigane is a well-tempered ko-itame with visible yubashiri. The hamon is a tight, ni-o-kuchi sugaha, giving it a very refined appearance. As mentioned earlier, in December 2025, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords certified this piece as a work by Kaifu, conducted a preservation appraisal, and issued a certificate of authentication. The koshirae is a shirasaya (white scabbard) set. Considering the condition of the blade, we have set a very reasonable price. This sword is highly recommended for those who wish to purchase their first Japanese sword but have a limited budget and prefer a piece with a certificate of authenticity. - Blade length: 69.6 cm - Curvature: 1.7 cm - Number of Mekugi hole: 1 - Sakihaba: 18.6 mm - Sakikasane: 3.4 mm - Motohaba: 28.3 mm - Motokasane: 5.3 mm - Signature: No signature - Era: Koto - Structure: Shinogi-zukuri, Iori-mune - Jigane: Koitame - Hamon: Suguha - Boshi: Massugu Haitte Nakamaru ni Kaeru - Weight: 640 g(blade only) - Nakago: Ubu - Koshirae: Shirasaya - Original Registration No.: Oita 23871
