Unlike the more commonly encountered signs reading 「マルカン酢」, this example uses the simpler historical form 「す」, making it a particularly desirable piece for collectors of Japanese advertising memorabilia. Founded in 1649 (Keian 2) during the early Edo period, Marukan is among the oldest vinegar producers in Japan, with a history spanning more than 370 years. The company became so highly regarded that a traditional saying praised its products alongside Japan’s finest sake makers. In 1908, Marukan was granted the distinction of supplying products to the Imperial Household, further enhancing its historical significance.
