松风, “Wind in the Pines” - 陶瓷 - Matsukaze (松風) - 日本 - Shōwa period (1926-1989)

Japanese Studio Pottery Sencha Tea Set with Original Tomobako (Signed Wooden Storage Box) – Matsukaze (松風) – Complete 11-Piece Set – Provenanced Missionary Collection from Japan A highly attractive and complete Japanese Sencha tea set comprising a signed side-handled yokode kyūsu teapot, five matching tea cups and five matching saucers, preserved together with its original handwritten wooden storage box (tomobako) and historic Japanese packing materials. This set originates from a long-held private collection assembled directly in Japan by a Norwegian missionary family who lived in the country for extended periods and maintained high-level social and cultural connections there. The family acquired Japanese objects locally over many years and brought them back to Europe. The tea set has remained together ever since and was discovered exactly as found, complete with its original storage box and historic Japanese wrapping papers. Particularly noteworthy is the survival of the original packing materials. Among them is a preserved Japanese PHP magazine wrapper priced at 10 yen, providing a valuable mid-20th century historical reference point. These materials have been retained exactly as found and form part of the provenance and history of the set. The ceramics display an elegant celadon-green crackle glaze with hand-painted bamboo decoration and calligraphic inscriptions. The combination of refined workmanship, complete preservation, original tomobako and matching inscriptions strongly suggests production for the Japanese domestic market rather than export. The inscriptions on both the tea set and the wooden storage box appear to reference Matsukaze (松風), meaning “Wind in the Pines”, a traditional Japanese artistic name associated with studio pottery and tea wares. The set appears exceptionally well preserved and may have seen little or no practical use. The overall presentation, original storage box and historic provenance make it a highly appealing collector’s piece for enthusiasts of Japanese tea culture, studio ceramics and post-war Japanese decorative arts. Contents: • 1 Yokode kyūsu teapot with lid • 5 matching tea cups • 5 matching square saucers • Original handwritten wooden tomobako (storage box) • Historic Japanese wrapping papers preserved with the set Dimensions: Teapot: Approx. 13 cm wide including handle and spout Tea cups: Diameter: 8.5 cm Height: 5.5 cm Saucers: 12 × 12 × 2 cm Condition: Excellent vintage condition.
