A large Byzantine bronze processional staff end or finial, cast in openwork as the Archangel Saint Michael. The figure is shown standing frontally, wearing a long robe, with feathered wings extending to either side. He holds a spear in one hand and a globe in the other, symbolising the Orbis Mundi, or world sphere.

The finial is made from a single substantial piece of bronze. Traces of tinning remain visible on both sides, which would originally have given the object a bright silver-like appearance when used during ceremonies or processions.

This is an exceptionally rare medieval artefact. In Byzantine and Medieval Christian tradition, Saint Michael was venerated as a protector and guardian, the leader of the heavenly armies in the battle against the devil and his followers.

Condition:
Heavy and solid bronze with visible signs of wear, surface marks, small losses, breaks, and age-related patination, consistent with age and use. The openwork figure remains clearly recognisable, with preserved traces of tinning on both sides. Minor surface irregularities and wear to the detailing.
