It does not include an original wooden box (tomobako). About Takaoka Copperware (高岡銅器): Originating in Toyama Prefecture, this metalworking tradition spans over 400 years. It began in 1609, when Maeda Toshinaga, the second lord of the Kaga domain, invited seven skilled metal casters to establish foundries in the castle town of Takaoka in order to stimulate local industry. While early production centered on everyday iron tools and agricultural implements, the industry developed through the Edo and Meiji periods into one known for highly refined copper and bronze art objects, Buddhist altar fittings, and tea ceremony utensils. During the Meiji period, Takaoka artisans gained international recognition by exhibiting their intricate works at world expositions in Paris and London. Today, Takaoka City produces the vast majority of Japan’s copperware. The region is known for sophisticated casting methods, detailed engraving, and a wide range of chemical patination techniques, including the Shudo coloring seen on this vase. In recognition of its historical and cultural significance, Takaoka Copperware was officially designated a Traditional Craft of Japan by the Japanese government in 1975.
