A striking bamboo ikebana basket 花籠 (hanakago) in the form of a hanging treasure ship, finely woven from richly patinated susutake 煤竹 ("smoked bamboo"). The basket is modelled as a boat-shaped vessel with an elegantly curved prow and stern. The hull is constructed from densely plaited narrow bamboo strips. Additional bamboo elements are integrated into the sides,. The bamboo has acquired a beautiful deep brown patina through age and use. Suspended by cord attachments, the basket was intended as a tsuri'hanakago 吊り花籠 (hanging flower basket). The form represents the Takarabune 宝船 (Treasure Ship), the mythical vessel carrying the Seven Lucky Gods across the heavens during the first days of the New Year. As such, it is a symbol of good fortune, prosperity, and auspicious beginnings.
