Ancient Roman terracotta oil lamp with rounded body, central discus, and projecting volute nozzle. The discus is decorated in relief with a seated Satyr or Pan playing pan flutes. Pan is shown in his characteristic form, with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a goat, including horns and a tail.

Two filling holes are present in the discus. Around the discus, the shoulder is decorated with vine leaves and grapes, a fitting Dionysiac motif associated with wine, fertility, music, and revelry.

-> Pan and satyrs were closely connected with the Dionysiac world of wine, music, nature, fertility, and festivity. The pan flute was one of Pan’s most recognisable attributes, while his goat-like form made him instantly identifiable in classical imagery.

Condition:
Fair condition with surface wear, deposits, small chips and old wear/loss to the nozzle. Attractive red-orange terracotta surface with a nice and clear depiction of Pan playing his flute. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. Rare small size and depiction.

-> Roman oil lamps were everyday household objects used to provide light with olive oil and a textile wick. They were commonly produced in moulds, allowing decorative scenes and motifs to be repeated across many examples.

-> The vine leaves and grapes around the discus reinforce the Dionysiac character of the scene. Such imagery was popular in Roman decorative art and could appear on lamps, mosaics, frescoes, sculpture, and small personal objects.
