Original copperplate map by Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598). The map depicts ancient Greece, the Aegean Sea and the western part of Asia Minor. It is based on a significantly older, multi-panel wall map by the Greek scholar Nikolaus Sophianos from 1540. The map was published from 1579 onwards as part of the Parergon, the supplementary atlas to ancient geography, which was appended to Ortelius’s famous magnum opus Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (the first modern atlas of the world). At the bottom left is an ornate title cartouche in the form of an ancient Greek temple, bearing the Latin inscription ‘Graecia, Sophiani. Abrahamo Ortelio descriptore’ and the Greek word ‘ΕΛΛΑΣ’ (Hellas). A graphic scale bar is inserted at the bottom right. Here, Ortelius does not depict the actual, contemporary Greece under Ottoman rule in the 16th century, but deliberately reconstructs the regions and borders of antiquity using classical, ancient names.
