Rare Rosenthal Studio-Line Coffee Set – Tapio Wirkkala – 100 Years Rosenthal Edition (1879–1979)
coffee set created by the celebrated Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala for Rosenthal Studio-Line, produced in 1979 as part of the official centenary celebration marking “100 Jahre Rosenthal 1879–1979”.
This exceptional set was never commercially available. It was produced exclusively by Rosenthal as a prestigious presentation gift for selected top business partners and associates during the company’s 100th anniversary celebrations.
Historical & Design Context
The design is directly inspired by an architectural work created by Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus movement, for Philip Rosenthal. Specifically, the vertical ribbed structure references the famous building designed as a special stable for Rosenthal’s factory mascot pig, “Roro”.
The distinctive vertical striations found throughout the porcelain echo the architectural rhythm and Bauhaus-inspired geometry of the original structure, creating a rare fusion of architecture, industrial design, and fine porcelain craftsmanship.
