Item Description: 藤井朱明 Fujii Shumei (1936–2017) This impressive large-scale vase (tsubo) is a masterwork of Arita porcelain (Arita-yaki) by Fujii Shumei, one of the most celebrated ceramic artists of the Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) and a master of the distinctive konoha (leaf-vein) technique. The piece features a bold, full-bodied spherical form of considerable presence, decorated in refined cobalt-blue underglaze (sometsuke) with Fujii's signature motif: a sweeping panoramic landscape depicting a sunrise (asahi) over mountain ranges rendered using the konoha method — a singular technique in which the delicate vein patterns of leaves are used to construct the texture of trees, forests and mountain slopes. Near mountains are painted with deep, dense brushwork, while distant peaks fade to subtle washes, creating a powerful sense of atmospheric depth and space. This technical mastery, combined with the luminous white porcelain ground, results in a work of rare visual poetry. The piece comes in its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako). Artist Profile 藤井朱明 Fujii Shumei (1936–2017) was born in Arita, Saga Prefecture, into a family with generations of involvement in ceramics. He began working at local overglaze decoration studios and porcelain manufacturers from the age of fifteen. In 1962 he achieved his first acceptance at the prestigious Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) with the work Kanryū, going on to be selected a further fifteen times. He established himself independently in 1963 as a specialist in nishiki-tsuke (overglaze decoration), and in 1974 opened his own kiln, the Shumei-gama. He is celebrated for a unique and wholly personal technique known as konoha (leaf-vein painting), in which the intricate vein structure of leaves is used to evoke the textures of trees and mountain landscapes in cobalt underglaze, capturing the seasonal scenery of Arita with extraordinary delicacy. His many accolades include the Japan Ceramics Exhibition Prize, the Minister of Education Award at the Kyushu-Yamaguchi Ceramics Exhibition, and the Japan New Craft Award. He was a Nitten Associate and member of the Saga Fine Arts Association. In 1994 he was awarded the Saga Prefecture Arts and Culture Merit Award. He passed away in 2017.
