An antique laboratory pipet-dispenser (apothecary dropper) dating from the late 19th to the first half of the 20th century, hand-blown from thick-walled glass with a characteristic greenish tint. The design consists of a long stem and a pear-shaped bulb. The device operates on the vacuum-lock principle: the narrow capillary channel at the tip of the tube holds the liquid inside due to surface tension as long as the control hole at the top of the bulb is covered with a finger. When the hole is uncovered, the atmospheric pressure equalizes, allowing for precise dispensing or draining of the contents. Such instruments were used in chemistry and pharmacy for handling aggressive reagents, as well as in early medicine as a manual aspirator.
