Septarian is not strictly speaking a mineral but a type of sedimentary rock formed millions of years ago in ancient seabeds. It would have started life as a ball of mud or sediment often formed around shell or fossil. As it hardened and shrunk cracks would developed inside. Later, mineral rich water would have filled the cracks with minerals like calcite, quartz, aragonite or baryte creating the spectacular and distnctive patterns which cab neem seen when the rock is cut open or polished
