Cor Noltee (1903-1967) - Moored Barges at a Quay

✦ RATED EXCELLENT This vibrant riverside scene is a fine example of the distinctive style of Cor Noltee, one of the leading figures of the final generation of Dordrecht artists. Trained at the Hague Academy of Fine Arts under Willem de Zwart and Henk van Leeuwen, he combined the traditions of Dutch Impressionism with a personal and expressive approach. Likely depicting a quay along one of Dordrecht’s waterways, the painting reflects Noltee’s lifelong fascination with rivers, barges, and the working landscapes of the Dutch delta. A moored sailing vessel dominates the foreground, animated by small but telling details, notably the colourful garments hanging from the rigging to dry. A harmonious palette of warm ochres, silvery blues, muted greys, and deep browns captures the subtle effects of light on water, sky, and weathered timber, while the broad handling of paint lends the scene a remarkable sense of atmosphere and immediacy. Born in The Hague in 1903, Noltee is regarded as one of the last Dutch Impressionists with strong ties to the Haagse School. After studying in The Hague and at the Académie Julian in Paris, he settled in Dordrecht in 1937, where the city’s waterways became a recurring source of inspiration. Throughout his career, he produced landscapes, cityscapes, river views, portraits, and still lifes, developing a vigorous and increasingly expressive style influenced by Willem de Zwart, Henk van Leeuwen, Ben Viegers, Kees Verwey, Isaac Israëls and George Hendrik Breitner. A splendid addition to any art collection. ⦿ Signed lower right: C Noltee ⦿ Dimensions (approx.): 35 x 50 cm (artwork), 41 x 57 cm (incl. frame/total). ⦿ Condition: Good, professionally revarnished. ⦿ Estimated Period: early 1940s ⦿ Please note: Frame included gratis; not part of the hammer price; no warranty. ⦿ Shipping: Fast dispatch ✓ Tracked ✓ Insured ✓ Eco-friendly ✓   – Dispatched from Germany, or local (free coffee:)) pick-up available.
