Housed in its original dovetail-joined wooden transport chest, this substantial instrument is a fine example of Soviet Cold War engineering. Built to military standards, the compass was designed to provide accurate directional information while at sea and to withstand harsh maritime environments. The compass is mounted in a robust gimbal suspension system, allowing the compass bowl to remain level despite the rolling and pitching motions of a vessel.
