Title: Japanese Karatsu Ware Style Gray Glaze Black Nagashi Hanaire by Kamei, with Tomobako Box Kiln: Karatsu Ware (唐津焼) style Artist: Kamei (嘉明) Dimensions: H 16.5 × DIA 8 cm (6.5 × 3.1 in) Weight: 636 g (1.40 lbs) Box Dimensions: H 19.2 × W 10 × D 11 cm (7.6 × 3.9 × 4.3 in) Material: High-fired stoneware Period: Late Shōwa to Heisei Period, c. 1990-2000 This is a fine gray glaze with black nagashi (流掛) hanaire (花入 - flower vase) by the Japanese potter Kamei (嘉明). Karatsu Ware (唐津焼), one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, has been celebrated since the Momoyama period for its rustic, earthy glazes and natural kiln effects. Gray glaze with black nagashi is a classic Karatsu style, and its wabi-sabi (侘寂) aesthetic makes it a classic subject in Japanese tea ceremony utensils. The vase is covered in a pale gray glaze base, with black glaze naturally cascading down the body, creating a natural kiln effect in the wabi-sabi style. The glaze has natural crackle texture with rich, deep patina. The straight cylindrical form with naturally finished rim and foot is characteristic of the classic tea ceremony hanaire style. This form is a traditional Japanese tea ceremony flower vessel, designed for chabana (茶花) tea room flower arrangement, and also suitable for studio display. The base bears the artist's incised mark. The original paulownia tomobako box is inscribed inside the lid with "Hanaire" and "Kamei" (嘉明) in ink, with a vermilion "Kamei" (嘉明) seal. Provenance complete. Natural age patina and signs of use consistent with period. Natural crackle glaze. No hairlines, no chips, no restoration. Complete with original paulownia tomobako (共箱) storage box and wrapping cloth. Overall good condition.
