A classic example of traditional Japanese metalworking. Crafted using traditional Japanese cast bronze techniques, with a copper alloy body and traditional oxidation colouring. A refined tea ceremony incense burner that combines auspicious symbolism with rustic elegance. Perfect for Japanese-style interiors, scholar's desk display, or for collectors of modern Japanese metalwork. This classic ding-style kōro has a dignified, stable form with strong, powerful lines. The body is melon-ribbed, with deeply carved karakusa (唐草 /scrollwork) pattern on the belly – three-dimensional and solid, with fine, intricate details and flowing, elegant decoration. The lid is topped with a three-dimensional lion finial – fierce yet lively, a classic auspicious motif in Asian tradition, symbolising protection, good fortune and warding off evil. The two side handles and three tripod feet give the piece a classic, ingenious design that is both stable and highly decorative. The pierced lid allows smooth, natural smoke flow. The original paulownia tomobako (共箱) lid bears the corresponding hand-inscribed marks "Dōsei Kōro (銅製 香炉)" and "Hōkō (芳光)", with a vermilion seal. Clear, reliable provenance. Hōkō is a representative master of traditional Japanese metalwork, specialising in classic forms and precise craftsmanship, particularly known for auspicious mythical beast subjects. Complete with original paulownia tomobako and yellow storage cloth. Full set of original accessories. Beautiful natural age patina and signs of wear consistent with period.
