The playing surface is a warm honey-toned wood with a clearly incised 9x9 grid, while the body of the board is finished in a deep, high-gloss black lacquer decorated with detailed polychrome maki-e style painted motifs. The front and back panels each carry a different scene. One side depicts the classic "Ryuko" (dragon and tiger) composition: a coiling dragon emerging from swirling clouds on the left confronts a prowling tiger among bamboo on the right, rendered in gold, silver, and polychrome pigments against the black ground. The opposite side features a serene landscape scene — mountains, a winding river, pagodas, and pine trees — executed in gold and green tones with fine stippled detail. The board stands on four sculpted black-lacquered feet in the traditional "hisago" (gourd) form, each with a cork pad on the base to protect surfaces. The underside of the board is finished in plain black lacquer with the four feet attached by screws.
