Such complete sets have become increasingly rare, as in most cases either the tablecloth or the napkins were extensively used over the generations. This set, however, remains in remarkably fresh condition.
This particular design was conceived in the 1870s and became instantly successful to the extent that the weaving looms could scarcely keep pace with demand. Every French family able to afford the luxury of adorning their table with such magnificent linen aspired to own a set.
Once again, this ensemble comes from the château near where I live, whose owners have been the guardians of four generations of ancestral linen. Their armoires are filled with exquisite treasures that have not seen daylight for decades, and little by little I am fortunate enough to acquire these exceptional pieces and give them new life once more.
The initials “G.A.” are hand embroidered in a style inspired by Roman lettering, perfectly suited to the Napoleon III period.
字母“G.A.”
The red friezes remain beautifully vivid — still “blood red” and entirely unfaded.
As this is a jacquard weave, the tablecloth may also be used in reverse, revealing an even richer intensity of red (see final photograph).
The set has been divided into two lots, though both will appear in the same auction.
