Artist Profile 池田満寿夫 Ikeda Masuo（1934-1997） Masuo Ikeda was born in 1934 in Mukden (Shenyang), Manchuria, and grew up in Nagano, Japan. A true polymath, he rose to international prominence as a printmaker, winning the Grand Prize for Printmaking at the Venice Biennale in 1966 at the age of 32 — making him only the second Japanese artist to receive this honor, after Shikō Munakata. In 1965, the Museum of Modern Art in New York organized his solo exhibition, the first by a Japanese printmaker at that institution. Ikeda worked across an extraordinary range of media — intaglio printmaking (drypoint, etching, mezzotint), lithograph, silkscreen, painting, ceramics, textile, and sculpture — while also pursuing a successful literary career. His novel Aegean Sea won the prestigious Akutagawa Prize in 1977, and he went on to direct the film adaptation himself. His enamel panels and decorative metalwork, such as the present work, were produced as limited collectibles that extended his artistic vision into decorative art accessible to a wider audience.
