A rare and attractive set of Chinese Export Mother-of-Pearl Gaming Counters dating to the late 18th century, circa 1770–1800. The set comprises 65 counters of various forms including rectangular, square, circular and fish-shaped examples, housed in its original black lacquer and gilt decorated box. The cover is finely painted with elegant baskets of flowers in the traditional Chinese “Auspicious New Year Offering” style, while the sides and interior retain traces of gilt floral decoration. Each counter is individually engraved with intricate geometric patterns, floral scrolls, birds and fish motifs. Such gaming counters were produced in Canton for export to Europe and were widely used for card games by wealthy families during the Georgian period. The counters remain in generally very good condition. The lacquer box displays expected age-related wear, losses and rubbing to the lacquer and gilding. Box with 65 mother-of-pearl counters.
