Stele for Neb-mes
- very fine style -
Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, 1575 - 1295 BC
Limestone.
21 cm height with stand. 17,5 cm height without stand, 13 cm width and 5 cm thickness.
Provenance
Private collection of Peter Itzvart (1943 - 2023), Paris, formed bettween 1975 – 1990.
Thence by descent.
Curved limestone stele showing a figure in profile looking to the right, with a perfume cone on his head and a tunic that leaves his upper body exposed. He carries a staff in his left hand and an object in his right. In front of him is an offering table with food and a column of hieroglyphs, which includes the name of the owner, the nobleman Neb-mes.
Limestone stelae in Ancient Egypt, especially during the Old Kingdom, served a funerary and commemorative purpose. They were placed in mastabas and depicted the owner, usually standing or seated before a table of offerings. These representations ensured their identity and eternal presence in the afterlife. Limestone, an abundant and easy-to-carve material, allowed for detailed reliefs and hieroglyphic inscriptions with names and titles. The stelae reflect social hierarchy, religious beliefs, and the importance of funerary cult in Egyptian life during the Old Kingdom, combining art, religion, memory, power, and enduring Egyptian ancestral tradition.
