Standing statue of Kannon Bodhisattva 観音菩薩立像 - 塑像 木 - 日本
This elegant standing statue depicts Kannon Bosatsu (Avalokiteshvara), the Bodhisattva of Compassion, one of the most beloved figures in Japanese Buddhism.
The statue is accompanied by its original tomobako (signed wooden storage box). The box bears the inscriptions:
木彫柘植 (Boxwood Carving)
観音仏像 (Kannon Buddhist Statue)
高村光雲 (Takamura Kōun)
The reverse side of the statue is also carved with the name “Takamura Kōun” (高村光雲).
The figure is carved from tsuge (Japanese boxwood), a material highly valued in traditional Japanese sculpture for its fine grain, durability, and ability to capture intricate details. The flowing robes, serene facial expression, and graceful posture demonstrate the refined craftsmanship associated with devotional Buddhist carvings.
Kannon Bosatsu is the embodiment of mercy and compassion. Revered throughout East Asia, Kannon is believed to hear the cries of all living beings and provide protection, guidance, and spiritual comfort. This form is depicted holding a sacred vessel, often associated with the purification of suffering and the bestowal of blessings.
The sculpture has a calm and dignified presence and displays the timeless beauty of Japanese Buddhist art.
Kannon Bosatsu (Avalokiteshvara) is one of the most important Bodhisattvas in Mahayana Buddhism and is widely worshipped throughout Japan.
Kannon symbolizes:
Compassion and mercy
Protection from misfortune
Guidance toward enlightenment
Relief from suffering and anxiety
Peace and spiritual harmony
The name Kannon is often translated as “The One Who Hears the Cries of the World,” reflecting the belief that Kannon responds to the prayers of those in need.
Because of these associations, Kannon statues have long been treasured as objects of devotion, meditation, and protection within Japanese homes and temples.
An elegant and finely carved example of Japanese Buddhist sculpture, complete with its original signed tomobako, making it an attractive piece for collectors of Buddhist art and traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
Fine boxwood carvings with original tomobako are becoming increasingly difficult to find, particularly in such well-preserved condition.
