一个木制面具 - Guro - 象牙海岸 (没有保留价)

This fetish mask of the Guro people from the Konari region belongs to the complex spectrum of spiritual object and mask traditions of the Guro. In contrast to the often idealized dance masks, characterized by elegance and harmony, fetish masks often embody the untamed and ambivalent forces of the unseen world. They served as vehicles of spiritual presence and were used in ritual contexts where protection, control, and the overcoming of supernatural dangers were paramount. Incl stand. The mask is distinguished by its haunting, almost menacing appearance. The deeply carved rectangular eyeholes give the face a rigid and ethereal quality, while the slightly open mouth reveals two rows of sharp teeth. This pronounced depiction of the teeth alludes to notions of spiritual power and the ability to ward off or banish harmful influences. The dark, almost black patina reinforces the impression of concentrated, mysterious force. The red-pigmented lower lip alone sets a striking accent, drawing attention to the realm of language, breath, and the efficacy of ritual invocations. Shell, pearl, and textile appliqués completely frame the mask, simultaneously serving as symbols of protection, prestige, and spiritual significance. The ring ornaments on the sides expand the silhouette and emphasize its presence in the ritual space. Cracks, abrasions, and patina from use document the object's long cultic history and lend it the character of a symbol of power activated over generations.
