一件木雕作品 - Luba - 刚果(金) (没有保留价)

This rattle sculpture from the Maniema region of Luba belongs to the rich tradition of figurative prestige and ritual objects for which Luba art is internationally renowned. Within Luba cosmology, sculptures functioned not only as aesthetic works but also as vehicles of memory, authority, and spiritual power. Rattles were used in ceremonial contexts and could be associated with notions of communication, invocation, and social legitimacy. Incl stand. The figure is enthroned on three superimposed spheres mounted along a central rod, terminating in a base. This unusual construction lends the object a pronounced vertical dynamism and emphasizes the figure's prominent position. The frontal, alert gaze conveys presence and attentiveness, while the elaborately ornamented hairstyle and the band framing the hairline suggest a well-groomed appearance and social standing. A rectangularly shaped goatee further underscores dignity and maturity. Characteristic of Luba sculpture is the emphasis on the abdomen as the center of vitality and lineage. The forward-curving torso with its prominently sculpted navel forms a central focal point of the composition. The arms, planted on the hips, lend the figure self-confidence and authority. The glossy patina, fine drying cracks, and minor abrasions and breaks testify to its age and repeated handling. The work impressively combines sculptural elegance with the concepts of power, memory, and spiritual efficacy that shape the Luba's cultural self-understanding. Literature (Selection) Mary Nooter Roberts / Allen F. Roberts, Memory: Luba Art and the Making of History, New York 1996. Pierre de Maret, The Power of Symbols and the Symbols of Power among the Luba of Central Africa, Tervuren 1985. Herbert M. Cole, Icons: Ideals and Power in the Art of Africa, Washington D.C. 1989. François Neyt, Luba: Aux Sources du Zaire, Paris 1993. Jacques Kerchache, Jean-Louis Paudrat and Lucien Stéphan, L'Art africain, Paris 1988. MAZ13593
