This Senufo equestrian figure from the Boundiali region of northern Ivory Coast belongs to a group of figurative representations that visualize power, social prestige, and spiritual authority in a concentrated form. Although equestrian depictions are relatively rare in Senufo art, they are often associated with notions of leadership, protection, and the ability to mediate between the human and spiritual realms. The Boundiali region formed an important cultural hub within the extensive Senufo cultural sphere. The horse is depicted in a highly abstract manner. Legs and hooves are reduced in favor of block-like front and hindquarters, giving the sculpture a monumental unity. Despite this formal simplification, the animal possesses an impressive presence. The open mouth, with its visibly detailed upper and lower teeth, lends it dynamism and expressiveness. The rider sits upright, holding onto a horn-like projection with his left hand, while his right grasps a broad staff, which can be interpreted as a symbol of authority, protection, or ritual function. The helmet, amulet on the solar plexus, and bracelets indicate status and spiritual security. The flat face with its characteristic protrusion around the mouth, as well as the fine incised ornamentation, correspond to known design principles of Senufo sculpture. The glossy patina and distinct signs of wear attest to prolonged ritual use and lend the sculpture its historical authenticity.
