瓷 - 日本 - Shōwa period (1926-1989)

Japanese Studio Porcelain Bowl – Hand Painted Bamboo & Plum Blossom – Signed – Shōwa Period – 32 cm A refined Japanese porcelain bowl combining minimalist ink painting with an unusual sculptural decorative rim inspired by organic crackled bark or stone textures. The broad shallow bowl is decorated in underglaze black with expressive brush-painted bamboo, plum blossoms (ume) and elegant calligraphy executed in the Japanese sumi-e tradition. The composition makes extensive use of negative space, creating a calm and balanced Zen-inspired aesthetic. The exterior rim is particularly distinctive, featuring an applied brown relief decoration resembling natural bark, weathered rock or crackled tree branches. This highly unusual treatment gives the bowl a sculptural appearance rarely encountered in standard Japanese export porcelain. The interior bears an artist’s hand-painted calligraphic inscription, likely representing the studio or artist’s signature rather than a poetic text. The bowl originates from an old Norwegian estate assembled by collectors of Japanese antiques over many decades and was acquired together with several other Japanese porcelain objects. ⸻ Measurements Diameter: 32 cm Height: 7 cm Material: Porcelain Decoration: Hand-painted underglaze brushwork Relief decorated rim Origin: Japan Period: Shōwa period circa 1920–1955 ⸻ Condition Very good vintage condition. No visible restoration. No visible cracks. No significant chips observed. Minor firing imperfections and age-related wear consistent with age. Please study all photographs carefully as they form part of the description. ⸻ Notes The calligraphic inscription appears to represent the artist or studio signature rather than a literary inscription. Due to the cursive artistic brush style, an exact reading cannot be guaranteed, although it is tentatively interpreted as Toyū / Kiyotsugu. The attribution is therefore presented as a qualified interpretation rather than a certainty. This is important because cursive Japanese signatures can be difficult to read with certainty, even for native readers. ⸻ Japanese porcelain, Japanese studio pottery, Japanese studio porcelain, studio ceramic, Shōwa porcelain, Shōwa ceramics, bamboo painting, plum blossom, ume, sumi-e, Japanese ink painting, Zen art, Zen aesthetic, signed Japanese porcelain, Japanese bowl, decorative bowl, porcelain charger, hand painted porcelain, Japanese ceramics, Japanese art, Oriental ceramics, Asian ceramics, Kyoto pottery, Seto ware, Mino ware, vintage Japanese porcelain, collector ceramics, porcelain bowl, sculptural rim, relief decoration, modern Japanese ceramics, Japon, porcelaine japonaise, céramique japonaise, porcellana giapponese, ceramica giapponese, porcelana japonesa, cerámica japonesa, japanisches Porzellan, japanische Keramik, Japans porselein, Japanse keramiek, Wabi-sabi, Zen decor KF 5
