A rare and highly symbolic cast iron relief plaque titled Universitas Aeterna ("Eternal University"), designed by renowned Berlin sculptor Erich Fritz Reuter and cast by the prestigious German foundry Buderus AG in 1958. The original monumental version of this composition was created in 1954 for the main library of the Technical University of Berlin, where it remains an important example of post-war German public art. This smaller collector's edition was issued in 1958 to commemorate the International Geophysical Year, an international scientific collaboration that marked a milestone in modern research. The plaque is conceived as an allegory of human knowledge and intellectual progress. Within its geometric composition, Reuter combines symbols from science, mathematics, philosophy, religion, architecture and the arts. Notable motifs include Einstein's famous E = mc², Dürer's magic square from Melencolia I, molecular and crystalline structures, mathematical graphs, classical architectural elements, abstract human profiles, and the ancient Christian fish symbol (Ichthys).
