EKDS Standard Hemometer Type 16 – Japanese Laboratory Instrument by Kayagaki Works Co., Ltd., Tokyo (1964)
An original EKDS Standard Hemometer Type 16, manufactured by Kayagaki Works Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan, complete with its original fitted case, instruction booklet, factory quality certificates dated December 1964, cleaning brush, glass accessories and reagent bottle.
Research indicates that EKDS instruments were produced for hospitals, laboratories and educational institutions in Japan, with Kayagaki Works specializing in hematological laboratory equipment. The two original certificates confirm that this instrument met the Japan Hematological Standard (J.H.S.), providing excellent provenance and dating for the set.
The instrument is based on the Sahli (acid haematin) haemoglobin determination method, one of the most widely used techniques for measuring haemoglobin concentration during the mid-20th century. In this method, a measured blood sample was drawn into a capillary pipette using a rubber suction bulb, mixed with hydrochloric acid contained in the reagent bottle to convert the haemoglobin into acid haematin, and then diluted until the colour matched the permanent comparison standard inside the EKDS comparator.
The set includes:
EKDS Type 16 comparator
Original graduated haemoglobin tube
Original 0.02 ml glass blood pipette
Two glass stirring rods
Original reagent bottle with stopper
Cleaning brush
Original instruction booklet
Two original factory quality certificates dated December 1964
Original fitted storage case
Please note: the original rubber pipette suction bulb (pipette filler) is no longer present. This rubber component was a consumable accessory used to draw blood into the capillary pipette and was commonly replaced or lost over time. Aside from this missing consumable, the set appears remarkably complete and is offered as a historically significant medical laboratory instrument and collector's item, rather than for practical laboratory or medical use.
The outer case displays expected signs of age, including minor scuffs and wear consistent with careful use over six decades. The instrument, glass components and accompanying documentation remain well preserved. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.
