You are bidding on a very rare beautiful matrix with a negative armor plate from an Arthropleura (giant millipede) from the Carboniferous period found by myself in June 2026 in the region Saarland, Germany. Take your chance!
This giant millipede lived in modern-day Europe and North America around 344 to 292 million years ago. This fossil is between 309 and 302 million years old and was found on a mine dump in rest material of layers that went to 900 metres deep!
Arthropleura was a millipede, and was capable of reaching at least 2 metres in length, possibly up to over 2.5 metres, making it the largest known land arthropod of all time!!
Arthropleura is known from body fossils as well as trace fossils.
It lived in open, sparsely wooded environments near water, and may have been amphibious.
First discovered in 1849 during construction of a railway near Friedrichsthal (Saarland) in Germany, Arthropleura has consistently attracted much artistic and scientific attention, yet has historically been known from mostly fragmentary remains. Arthropleura was the fossil of the year in 2015 in Germany.
